The
office of the Chief of Army Staff (COAS) is at the apex of the NA
structure. It exists under his command, to deter all forms of

1 Division Nigerian Army known, as "the first" is one of the Divisions established during the Nigerian civil war. The Division formerly known as the "First Infantry Division" was born out of the former " 1st Brigade" of the Nigerian Army which was later christened, " 1 Area Command".
The outbreak of civil hostilities in Nigeria in 1967 necessitated the creation of additional divisions of the nation's army.At the heat of the battle, a unique army division was formed, and was given a name that was synonymous to its terrain of operation.
81 Division is the youngest Division in the Nigerian Army. The Division was formed on 26 May 2002 when Lagos Garrison Command (as it then was) was upgraded to a full-fledged Division. The Division therefore inherited the security roles hitherto performed by the defunct Lagos Garrison Command.
82 Division formally known as 4 Infantry Division came into existence in August 1975 following a reorganization of the Nigerian Army (NA) in the same year. The 4 Infantry Division formally Lagos Garrison Organization (LGO) was created and located at Abalti Barracks, Lagos in January1964.

PRESS STATEMENT:ARMY COUNCIL RETIRES OFFICERS IMPLICATED IN AKURE MUTINY EPISODE AND PROMOTES OTHER
The Army Council has confirmed the
sentences passed on officers who were convicted by the General Court Marshal
which tried the army personnel arraigned before it for mutiny in Akure in July
2008. The four affected officers have also been compulsorily retired on
administrative grounds.
Although the council noted that the
officers did not steal the money, but rather misapplied the funds, in that they
paid to soldiers of 72 Bn Makurdi, the money meant for 312 Artillery Regiment,
Akure. The council considered the effect of their reduction in rank and various
awards of loss of seniority as having negative implication on the morale and disposition
of troops towards one another, and therefore decided to separate them from the
Nigerian Army in the interest of justice, good order and discipline generally.

Personnel welfare and the lift capacity of the
Nigerian Army received a boost yesterday (Thursday 8 October 2009) as about 360
utility vehicles were commissioned into service for different purposes. The
occasion took place at Mogadishu Cantonment, Abuja.
Ten of the vehicles were new 50-seater Mercedes Benz
Tourismo luxury buses earmarked for troops' induction and their return on
completion of their tour of duty in peace support operations, while 70 duty
trucks of the Sino Howo make for use in training, exercises and operations, formed part of the fleet.
WELCOME ADDRESS BY THE COAS ON THE OCCASION OF THE COMMISSIONING OF NEW VEHICLES PROCURED BY THE NA
PROTOCOL
1. On assumption
of office about a year ago, I was confronted with 3 key problems among several
others. These were the prevailing and
acute accommodation problems especially for soldiers in Abuja, the poor state
of vehicles across all the formations and poor health care delivery services. As you may all know, these 3 issues are
fundamental and central to the performance of our contemporary dominant roles
of providing aid to civil authority and fulfilling our external obligations in
terms of peace support operations. Indeed, they are also crucial for the
realization of our vision for the NA.
